US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, has died following an intervention by US military units in northwestern Syria.

“Last night the US did justice with the world’s number one terrorist,” said Trump, who noted that the nation “had been looking for it for many years, and was the top priority of my Administration.”

He has confirmed that no US agent has been injured in the operation, in which Baghdadi was immolated with a belt of explosives while fleeing through a tunnel of US commandos.

Several hours before appearing, Trump posted a message on his Twitter account that said: “Something very big just happened.”

In his appearance, the president of the United States has congratulated the US special forces and intelligence services for a “very, very dangerous operation.” In addition, he thanked the collaboration of Turkey, Russia, Syria, Iraq, and the Kurds to locate the leader of the Islamic State.
